Jalaram Bapa, one of Gujarat’s most beloved Hindu saints, is known for his unwavering
devotion to Lord Rama and his life dedicated to serving others. Born in 1799 in Virpur, a
village in the Rajkot district of Gujarat, Jalaram was the son of Pradhan Thakkar and Rajbai
Thakkar, belonging to the Lohana community. From a young age, he exhibited a deep spiritual
inclination, showing a natural affinity for sadhus, saints, and acts of kindness. His life
was destined for devotion, and he spent much of it in the service of the poor, the needy,
and pilgrims.
At the age of 18, after completing a pilgrimage to sacred Hindu sites, Jalaram became the
disciple of Bhoja Bhagat of Fatehpur. His guru initiated him with the Guru Mantra and a japa
mala, guiding him in his spiritual journey. Inspired by his guru’s teachings, Jalaram Bapa
started the "Sadavrat" (a feeding center) in his home, where sadhus, saints, and the less
fortunate could come and receive food at any time, symbolizing his deep commitment to
selfless service.
Jalaram Bapa’s home was also a place of divine miracles. It is said that after installing an
idol of Lord Rama, other idols—those of Lord Hanuman, Sita, and Lakshman—miraculously
appeared, and grains in his house never ran out, symbolizing the endless abundance of God’s
blessings. His fame spread far and wide, and people from all walks of life—Hindus, Muslims,
and people from various castes and creeds—flocked to him for his grace, blessings, and food.
Despite his marriage to Virbai, the daughter of Pragjibhai Thakkar of Atkot, Jalaram Bapa
was inclined toward a life of renunciation, focusing his energy on feeding the poor and
serving the community. His wife, Virbai, supported him in his spiritual mission, standing by
him as he continued his work for the welfare of humanity. Over time, his acts of service
became legendary, with more devotees joining him in his efforts to help those in need.
Jalaram Bapa’s influence grew, and he became known not just for his miraculous deeds but for
his ability to unite people from different backgrounds through his acts of kindness. His
legacy of service and devotion remains alive today, especially in Virpur, where the
tradition of feeding people continues in his name.
The main shrine of Jalaram Bapa is located in Virpur, at the very place where he lived and
carried out his mission. The shrine houses his personal belongings and the idols of Rama,
Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman that he worshipped. It remains a center of pilgrimage, where
devotees come to pay their respects and seek blessings.
Jalaram Bapa’s life stands as a shining example of selfless service, deep devotion, and the
power of compassion. His teachings continue to inspire millions, reminding us of the
importance of humility, love for others, and devotion to the divine.
